Hogs Pop Higher on Tuesday
Lean hog futures were up 85 cents to $1.10 on Tuesday. The national average base hog negotiated price was reported at $84.32 on Tuesday afternoon, up $3.93 from the day prior. The CME Lean Hog Index was reported at $81.94 on January 24, up 2 cents from the previous day.
USDA’s FOB plant pork cutout value was 30 cents lower in the Tuesday PM report at $92.86 per cwt. The belly, ham, and picnic primals were the only reported higher, with the other three down in a range of $2.69 to $2.96. Federally inspected hog slaughter for Tuesday was at 489,000 head, with the week to date total at 972,000 head. That is 68,000 head above last week but down 10,160 head from the same week last year.
